PRINCIPAL'S NOTE
The Waggoner Elementary School community is dedicated to the growth and development of our students. Our program maximizes student success academically, socially, and developmentally. An ongoin focus to create a positive school climate is supported by the Learning Environment Committee and Parent Teacher Association, two active parent-community groups. We will add to our school gardens, beautification projects, and work to develop plans for future modernization. Peer tutors work with students to organize activities, mentor, and work with individual students needing one-on-one support. Two ongoing programs for students are the Student Council and Conflict Managers, excellent opportunities to develop good leadership and communication skills. We will begin an afterschool program this year to support students academically. The two components of this program will be a homework club and a tutoring program to assist students who are at-risk academically. Future goals will focus on expanding this program to include enrichment activities. For parents, we will offer an English as a Second Language class in the evening with the hope of having a parallel program at Yolo Housing.
During the fall of 1999, we will add to last year's technology upgrades, which included new state-of-the-art computers in every classroom and the introduction of the Sequoyah Reading Program. A new communication system will allow teacher-parent contracts directly and increase our efficiency in communicating with parents and the community. Technology upgrades for this year also include the modernization of our library. Moneys from a library grant will allow us to bar code our stacks and improve our ability to monitor and track our collections.
